Appendix 3.7: KALANGA
There is a substantial body of literature in the Kalanga language, much of it produced through the efforts of the Mukani Action Campaign, registered with the government of Botswana in 1999. Mukani is a society of writers with the purpose of promoting and preserving Ikalanga, and other minority languages spoken in Botswana, through the production of literature and the promotion of communication in those languages. Below is a list of materials published by the Mukani Action Campaign. In addition, Mukani also publishes books in partnership with authors, in which case Mukani helps with typing, formatting and printing but costs are underwritten by authors. A list of these materials also appears below.
Mukani accomplishes these activities in partnership with other organisations who have similar goals, including the Society for the Promotion of Ikalanga Language (SPIL), the Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (LCSA), the Bible Society of Botswana, the Kalanga Bible Translation Project, and Lutheran Bible Translators. Mukani itself is a largely volunteer organisation with two part time staff governed by an executive committee consisting of nine members. Currently Mukani receives financial support from Lutheran Bible Translators, through the Lutheran Church in Southern Africa Kalanga Literacy project. All other funds (about 60%) are either raised through local fundraising and the sale of books. For more information about the materials listed below and how to obtain them, please see the contact information at the bottom of the section.
In addition to the materials listed below, the Bible Society of Botswana (in partnership with Lutheran Bible Translators, the Lutheran Church in Southern Africa and United Bible Societies) has published the New Testament in Ikalanga (currently under revision); the Old Testament is also being drafted. The Ministry of Health has also begun to produce informational materials in Ikalanga, representing a very important step on the part of this ministry towards reaching Botswana’s minority groups in their own languages.
